Obamalot dispatch #1

It's Sunday and we've barely left the house, so I haven't any great stories of running into the Obamas at Ben's Chili Bowl. We were going to go to the Museum of Natural History but decided instead to slide into a delicious Day of Sloth. In the evening we attended a couple of gallery openings. So far Washington is strangely quiet. Hardly anyone was about in Adams Morgan last night. Is everyone saving themselves for Tuesday? We hear all the parties are happening at the hotels.

Anyway, last night I made this apple and fennel dish: three chopped apples, one sliced fennel bulb, about 1 cup chopped radicchio, drizzled with olive oil and topped with pine nuts. I roasted at 375 degrees for about 15 minutes, until the pine nuts were toasted but before the apples became mushy. This would also be good with walnuts.

Our friend has a great way to cook fish: place a fillet over a little bit of water and olive oil in foil, add lemon juice and lemon zest, pour plain yogurt over the fish, season with salt, pepper, and maybe a few herbs, and then roast in oven for just a few minutes (5-10, depending on the size). Remove from the oven and let sit covered for another 5-10 minutes. We had cod, but you could do this with other types of fish.

Lane is getting ready to see the big concert on the Mall today. I just hope he doesn't do anything to get arrested. Later on there will be a dinner party including two other little boys.

This has even less to do with Obama, but I'm loving the colors and patterns I see around our friends' house.
